Webinar Details:  Aerosol drug delivery is affected by a broad range of patient and environmental variables (e.g., breathing maneuvers, air flows, breathing patterns, airway conditions, and ambient temperature and humidity). In vitro testing can provide insights to a wide array of variables of aerosol generation and interfaces with the goal of establishing some predictive models as to how the aerosol and device may impact the dose delivered to patients. Establishing in vitro/in vivo correlations (IVIVC) initiates the vital cycle of theory development and clinical feedback essential to develop predictive models of aerosol behavior and drug delivery. Even poor initial IVIVC can help to develop iterative “feedback loops” that provide new insights and may lead to more accurate models and improve predictive capabilities of bench work. Establishing IVIVC helps allow relatively rapid improvement of devices and formulations at no risk to patients, minimizing the frequency, cost and time associated with clinical trials and in vivo testing. Examples will be explored of the ways models vary in predictive value based on the methods used for characterization, the variables applied, and the transition from the simplicity of the bench to the complexity of the patient.

Presenter Information:  Dr. James Fink is currently Chief Science Officer for Aerogen Pharma Corporation and Senior Fellow Clinical Aerosol Product Development for Dance Biopharm, Inc. Prior to 2015, he was an independent consultant serving the biotech industry. Dr. Fink is an Adjunct Professor for the Respiratory Therapy Program at Georgia State University in Atlanta and at the Rush Medical School in Chicago and is a Visiting Professor, Department of Physical Therapy, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, Recife, Brazil. He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Aerosol Medicine and Pulmonary Drug Delivery and of Inhalation as well as on the ISAM board. In 2017, he was awarded the Forest M. Bird Lifetime Scientific Achievement Award from the American Respiratory Care Foundation.

Guest Moderator Information:  Dr. Daryl L. Roberts is co-inventor of the Next Generation Impactor (NGI) and has developed and published practical methods to allow impactor users to determine whether new and used impactors are suitably within compendial specifications. He is a guest member of the Impactor Subcommittee of the European Pharmaceutical Aerosol Group, a contributor to the USP Aerosol Experts Committee, on the editorial board of Inhalation, and a regular contributor and reviewer of articles for AAPS Pharm. Sci. Tech., Aerosol Science and Technology, and Drug Delivery to the Lungs (DDL; the Aerosol Society).
