Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) is the world’s largest funder of food allergy research, and the largest US non-profit focusing on food allergy awareness. Its Teen Advisory Group (TAG) helps lead FARE’s youth programs, develop content and represent FARE at national events. TAG’s initiatives include supporting food banks for food-allergic users and mentoring students who have food allergies. Its Allergy Advocate Toolbox provides grade-level resources and a collection of stories, advice and strategies for increasing involvement and creating change.
FARE recommends using books to teach young children as they learn—and sometimes struggle—to manage and live with their allergies and advocate for themselves. A food-allergic child can face difficult social situations but books can help them learn coping skills and build supportive friendships. Books can also teach allergy-free children how to be supportive friends of allergic children. In addition, the article provides websites that review and recommend books that can assist children with food allergies.
