The European Pharmaceutical Aerosol Group (EPAG) was founded in 1999 based on the premise that “industry is able and stronger when it works together to deliver much-needed orally inhaled and nasal drug products (OINDPs).” EPAG’s work continues to support that premise today. This article provides a look at their recent activities as well as their early years.

Recent activities: In 2024, the plenary group provided feedback to the European Medicines Agency (EMA) on draft scientific guidelines, welcomed a new member and saw a change in personnel. The impactor sub-team made progress in new investigational areas and is looking to provide guidance for industry and academia on recovery of biologically active and large molecules from impactors and characterization of sub-micron particles. The dissolution sub-team’s main activity was planning and participating in the EPAG-sponsored dissolution workshop co-located with the 2024 MVIC Symposium. The nasal sub-team is continuing to develop a European Pharmacopeia (Ph Eur) methodology for nasal sprays to conduct aerodynamic particle size analysis, as well as proposing suitable methodologies for measuring dose content uniformity in nasal sprays. This article also briefly reviews EPAG’s founding and evolution.
