FRI allows a quantitative assessment of the imaged airway volume of an individual airway at the aggregate lobar and lung level.

A growing number of papers discuss the use of imaging in research trials. Over the last seven years, a proprietary quantitative image analyses approach called functional respiratory imaging (FRI) has been developed (FluidDA NV, Belguim), that combines methods from aerospace engineering with medical imaging.
