This article describes a series of in vitro studies, and supporting in vivo studies, of nanoparticle interactions with the first targets of inhaled nanoparticles, affecting particle translocation and interaction in the alveolar region of the lung: the alveolar lining liquid, alveolar macro phages and the alveolar epithelium.
